In My Life

I lost you so long ago, but I don't care
So many other things have filled in your space
These poems I write that your beauty bare
I accept they are substitutes for your embrace.

Life has gone on and you are a fading memory
Even though you may live anew in my rhyme
But each day you move further away from me
Until the final call of merciful time.

It is only that, for some reason, you reappear
While all that is here your place take
I guess as long as I draw breath you are here
Life can never truly heal what love can break.

But, it is alright, I have gotten over you
Forgive me if this verse proves me wrong
After all, my heart refutes what I think true
If you are not in my life, still here belong.
